Caricature Mini Lesson
As a 2 day lesson while subbing for a middle school art teacher I was given free reign on what to do with the 7th and 8th graders. As they had just worked on portraits I felt an enjoyable lesson dealing with caricatures would be a good change of pace. Caricatures focus on the specific and individual features which make one person different from another and in turn help create a more accurate portrait.
As a class we watched a Powerpoint that dealt with what a caricature is, and how a caricature is created. We viewed a selection of celebrity caricatures and talked about the specific features that were exaggerated to make the image look more like the person. We discussed exaggeration in detail and how it means more than just making something larger.
Students were given the choice of drawing from images of famous people which I had brought in or to draw other students in the room. The majority of the students chose to work with the famous people images which is what you see here. A few students chose to work with drawing each other in the classroom. Ground rules were set in place to ensure that all was in good fun and learning was the main focus of the assignment.
