First Grade Student Art Projects
Pinch and Pull Ceramic Audubon Birds
First grade students were introduced to working with clay along with the artist John James Audubon. They learned about Audubon and his passion for his chosen subject of birds, and how we know him today as the beginnings to the Audubon Society. First grade classes talked about how art can be the beginning of making a difference in the world just like Audubon inspired many societies for wildlife and natural conservation. The first graders also learned how to roll, pinch, pull, poke, and smooth clay into small "angry bird" shapes. First graders also learned how clay changes when put in a kiln and used ceramic glaze to paint their birds.

Van Gogh Inspired Flowers Drawing
First grade students created a mixed media still life of flowers using oil pastels to draw in
the painterly style of Vincent Van Gogh in a cut paper collage. Students learned how to make painterly strokes to create art in the style of Van Gogh and looked at several of his paintings. Students also learned about symmetry and how to make a symmetrical flower pot and radial symmetry flowers using cut construction paper.
