Fourth Grade Student Art Projects
Pacific Northwest Native American Masks
Students created ceramic masks in the style of the Pacific Northwest Native American tribes with raised and incised areas, finished with tempera paint. Fourth Graders were taught how to use ceramic tools to create designs, carve, cut, and add layers of new clay to create their masks. Students were taught to combine clay using the SSPS method (Score, Slip, Press, Smooth). The fourth graders also learned about the social and cultural uses of masks and some of the universal themes that we see in masks across different cultures.

Optical Illusions
Fourth Graders learned about the art movement of Op Art, and how an optical illusion works. They also learned about complimentary colors and how they affect our vision, and how that becomes useful in the crafting of our own optical illusions.
