My Teaching Philosophy
_
I believe that a quality and individualized education is the right of every student. Every child to enter a school should have the right to feel safe, comfortable in their own skin, and encouraged to succeed and to be curious. Every child’s innate curiosity and creativity should be encouraged to further their own individual goals and abilities. They should be provided every opportunity to grow as individuals and as a part of a community.
It is the duty of the teacher to take stock of the students’ emotional, social, mental, and physical needs in order to best serve them. As a professional educator the teacher should be able to work with the parents, community, and administration as a cohesive team to provide a proper framework and environment for a student to achieve their individual best. To meet individual student needs it is important to vary the approaches one takes to learning. Using cooperative learning strategies, integrating technology, providing opportunities for self discovery, and guided instruction are all necessary methods to assist students of all skill levels to achieve. A teacher should be taking into account students’ multiple intelligences and skill sets to hone lessons in on their individual needs as unique learners as well.
Student achievement and learning should not only be continuous, but able to be assessed. Assessment of students is a cooperative process in which the teacher is involving the students with their own evaluation. Students should be informed what it is they will need to learn, and the teacher will be constantly checking in with them. Students should be taught how to self-appraise their own work early in the learning process to help them develop the capability to judge their own progress and create new goals for themselves. Learning is a lifelong process of setting goals and reaching to exceed them that begins early in life. Children are naturally inquisitive and creative and should be guided to maintain these qualities as they progress to adulthood. Pablo Picasso said it best; “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
As an educator I aim to bring an upbeat attitude, high expectations, and a love of learning to my classroom. My students should see through my words and actions that I care about them and their ability to achieve. Maintaining consistent and high expectations for my students will eventually become an expectation they will apply to their own lives. I do my utmost to keep their education within their zone of proximal development to keep my students reaching for more, but not out of reach. My hope is to create a self fulfilling prophecy of constantly becoming better than they were the day before and always taking the time to see something from a different view. While not every student will grow to become an artist, each and every one has the capacity to think creativity and the drive to push themselves to seek new knowledge and skills. Helping them along this lifelong journey is my goal as an educator.
