Third Grade Student Art Projects
Expressive Self Portraits
Third grade students learned about making self-portraits and why artists make them. One reason that was focused on in third grade was being able to show more than just the person; they can show emotions. Third graders were taught about the use of creative and expressive color and what it can say about your own portrait. Students were asked to create a portrait of themselves that incorporated color that expressed their own mood, their favorite colors, or even interests that they might have.

Laylah Ali Inspired Comic Book Heroes
Third graders were introduced to the contemporary artist Laylah Ali, who works on paintings of characters that are inspired by images she finds in the media now and from when she was a child. Third graders learned the difference between making something inspired by someone or something versus copying the other person or work. Students looked at Laylah Ali's work as well as the work of current comic book illustrators and followed their steps to creating a new, unique hero of their own. Students found media images of figures in active poses and were taught how to create a gesture drawing from these, and then transform that into the pose of their superhero. The Third graders also learned about using a limited palette to create their super heroes.
